Top tips for Marketing Videos: Lighting

    video production costs

Although the video can be edited in terms of brightness and contrast in the post-production phase, its far better to get the shot right on the day of the shoot rather than relying on being able to fix the lighting quality during editing. Here at Oh Video, we are experts in video production and marketing, and this is our guide to lighting during video production.

    Light conflicts

It may not seem like a huge issue, but the conflict between artificial light and natural light can ruin your entire footage. This is because both of these types of light have different temperatures that lead to a visual contrast when filming. To prevent this, ensure that your primary light source is even and controlled. When filming indoors, even positioning your subject further away from any natural light (from windows or doors) can help you control the level of contrast that occurs from the two different light sources.

    White Balance

A top tip for shooting great footage is to manually adjust your camera’s white balance. This is really important as it helps the camera to know what is “true white” within the environment you are filming, otherwise colour casting can occur, again ruining your footage. Shooting a fully balanced shot using your cameras white balance is essential, otherwise the true colours of the shot won’t be captured.

    Spotlighting

Try and avoid placing your subject in a bright pool of light as an intense light source can ruin the contrast and brightness of your footage, cause reflections that can be unflattering, as well as making your subject feel highly uncomfortable. If you have a lighting rig of your own, make sure that you get the correct intensity of light before shooting begins, to save time and prevent unsightly shadows and reflections.

    In summary

Lighting in production is essential and bad lighting can ruin your marketing video. Important considerations include lighting conflicts between natural and artificial light, adjusting the white balance and spotlighting. For all your video needs, contact us at Oh Video today.
