Is Virtual Reality going to take over?

    virtual reality in video

As a video production company we are always keen to be at the very forefront in media innovation. So with that in mind we decided that it was utterly necessary to obtain the latest development kit for The Oculus Rift!

The Oculus Rift is a virtual reality headset which runs from a fairly powerful PC. It allows you to step into the world of games and scenery like you couldn’t imagine.

The second you step into an application it feels almost like you’ve been transported to a different plain of existence, it’s really surreal. Your brain immediately just accepts everything you see to just be solid and right.

You even get a true sense of motion; you can’t help but reach out and try to touch stuff.

The consumer version goes on sale in the early part of 2016 and given the experience we’ve had with it so far on the limited applications, it’s not hard to see that this will be a massive game changer.

You can obtain a slight sense of the experience with the latest update to Facebook and Youtube where you can now view 360 videos that allow you to pan a full 360 degrees around the video. This in itself is a much more immersive experience.

But what does this mean for the video industry? Well it’s not going to replace conventional 2d video over night, that’s obviously going to continue to be of massive importance to business and media sites. However as a video production company we are keen to make sure we are always on the pulse of the next big thing and this surely is something to keep a close eye on.

It could be a case in ten years or so when we look back at the way we watch media now and see it as the way radio was super seeded by TV. Obviously radio still has its place , but the shift from listening to watch was significant, in the same way I believe that watching will transition to complete immersion.

As always we will work hard to keep ahead, be assured that if we can offer this as a tool for business we will.
